WTF?

Did you know that there were CHILDREN being held at camp xray for more than A YEAR???
All of them were released today (thank god!) and all of them are under the age of 16.
And yes, this does violate the Geneva convention.

Is this making the news in the States?

Oscar babble.

The Oscar nominations are up. I'm really excited about 'Lost in Transation' getting so many nominations. I really need to go out and see 'In America' and 'Mystic River'. And what about Keisha Castle-Hughes? How cool is that? I'm so blown away that this little film from the other side of the world hit the big time. It is so deserved. Good on ya!
I just noticed (cuz of my bro) that a song from 'A Mighty Wind' got nominated for best song. Wow. That's too cool.

Lips, Bears, and a Nun (oh my!)

So in the last 24 hours we have seen the Flaming Lips twice.
Oh, and We've seen Peaches, Sonicanimation, Gerling, The Strokes, Cherry 2000, Ahpex Twin, some scary Kiss cover band, A little bit of Severed Heads (we think...) and a few other bands.

Of those shows, The Flaming Lips stand out.
Big, bold, and in Technicolor.
But this is not about the show itself, this is about what that happened on the way to the show and our attempt at getting into a smelly bear suit.

I looked at the Flaming Lips web site to see what the scoop is about getting on stage as one of the dancing furry animals. Their web site says to 'show up early and look for Corey the animal wrangler'. we did, and we did. Well, sort of.
We were there early, looked for Corey, but to no avail. No one fitting the description (a roadie with lots of tattoos) came around looking for bodies to fill suits.
I was a little bummed.
But there was still an awesome show to watch, right? So all was still good.

We had a good hour before the show started and it was the first time either of us had been in the Enmore Theater so we did a little exploring. The Enmore, for the uninitiated, is a small art deco theater in one of Newtown. (Newtown is one of Sydney's arty-farty inner suburbs.) I wanted to check out all of the cool plaster work on the ceiling and look at the deco wall sconces.
While staring at the ceiling I noticed something in the balcony.
A person in a bear suit.
My heart jumped.
Now at most shows a person in a bear suit might have gotten escorted out by the usher, but this was a Lips show.
I ran two steps at a time up to the balcony.
There were two guys filming the aforementioned person in the bear suit.

At this point I should mention something.
If you have seen the Lips in concert recently you know some of the props that they use. Hulk hands, balloons, strobe light, and a nun puppet. I happen to have one of those nun puppets. (mostly because of my SIL, but that is another story) And I brought my nun puppet to the show thinking that if I should see Corey the animal wrangler I would show him my nun puppet and he might say, 'wow, you are too cool for school. come and dance on stage in a koala suit' (ok, yes, I have a very active fantasy life).

The point is that it was time to whip out my secret weapon.
I first showed the usher (who laughed) and then caught the eye of one of the guys with the camera. He pointed at the nun and came over. He told me that they were filming a documentary about The Lips, the fans, and the whole animal suit thing. He was very impressed with the puppet and wanted to know if we wanted to be a part of their documentary!!!!!
uh, yeah!
So for the next 10 minutes of so they asked about the puppet, I danced with the guy in the bear suit, and made funny faces with the nun puppet at the camera. God it was fun. Josh (the fella from Sony doing the film) told us that the whole animal suit phenomenon has taken on a life of it's own. That they get calls from all kinds of famous people who want to be on stage. At the Sydney Big Day Out Drew Barrymore, her boyfriend (who is in the Strokes), and Peaches were all in animal suits at one point or another. Wow that's some famous sweat in those suits! They were such nice guys and really excited about out little homage.
Oh, for the record, yes, we did ask if there were any more suits to fill. But no luck. It really didn't matter. We got to chat with some people doing good stuff and get the inside scoop. Whoo-hoo!!!

So we may not have gotten into an animal suit, but hey, we could end up in a Lips documentary (if we don't end up on the cutting room floor!!!) Oh, and after all of that we still had one awesome show to watch! They even did She Don’t' Use Jelly.
What a night.
Can't wait to see the documentary.

ed to add:
Here is a little shot from the BDO show. You can sort of make out the nun puppet on the screen behind the band. Sorry the shot is kinda crappy, I took it on the little camera on my phone.

BDO yesterday.
Good (Gerling, Cherry 2000), Bad (Peaches aka The One Trick Pony) , and Ugly (Peaches again).
But the high point of the The Flaming Lips show. It made up for A LOT (Including the Kiss cover band). They were so good that we have decided to go see them again TONIGHT at the Enmore!!!! I'm gonna try to see if I can be an on stage animal (I'm not counting on it, but hey, I can try can't I?)

Go the LIPS!!!!

I'm so sad.
I woke up to find out that Capt'n Kangaroo died. I loved that show so much. I miss the days when children's television was not about what you could market to eager young minds, but about having fun and learning something.
I'll miss him.

random shit

I really hope that Spalding Gray is just hiding out in Jersey. Really.

I knitted a hat for a friend this week. The cool thing about that is that I did it without a pattern. Still waiting for the Cotton Fields web site to come back up....Until then, I need to pick up some 3.4mm DPNs at Lincrap.
I want to keep an eye on this thread about knitting blogs. Too much good stuff for one visit.

I'm starting the Scooter fund this weekend with some new eBay auctions. (I'll be posting them later today)

I'm going to be 34 in 4 months. Yikes!

The Aussie dollar is about $.75!!!!!!! WHoo-hoo!!!!

The Hubby and I are taking next week off(ok, not next week exactly, my first day off if friday). Depending on when I get all this TAFE registration sorted out we may get outta Dodge for a couple of days. Don't tell my DH, but I'm a little nervous about leaving the kitty alone. I know, I know cats are pretty independent and all, but the little fur boy has been under the weather this weekend. Oh, and on the TAFE thing, I got my grades back and I got distintions (aka Honors) on all the graded classes. Pretty cool.

I can't wait for Big Fish to open. I hope it is as good as the previews.

where does the time go?

where does the time go? I've had the last 4 days off and I can't belive I have to go back to work tomorrow. But we did do a lot. (in between naps on the sofa, I am still getting over being sick ya know)
-I'm nearly done knitting my second pair of socks (I'm getting pretty good at it too!)
-Rob and I went out on a date. We saw Lost in Traslation finally. And yes, like everyone says, it is an excellent film. And had dinner at BBQ King. (side note, if you are in Sydney, are not a vegetarian, and hungry, get yourself to BBQ King. Dont' be put off by the way it looks, it truly is the best value dinner in the city)
-Got Stitch n' Bitch by Debbie Stoller (thanks for the heads up Helen) I really should take if off my Amazon wish list now, eh?
-Finally hemmed Rob's pants.
-Made suntea.
-Went for a hike without getting a sunburn (yeah, 35 SPF)
-and tonight we are having good ole fashioned Aussie barbie. Snags, baked beans, potato salad, and corn on the cob. mmmm.

whew, that really was a lot.

Happy New Year.

whew, what a couple of days.
We spent our NYE at the Sydney Observatory.(photos soon, promise). Good food, lots of drink, fireworks, oh, and all the geeks observatory stuff you can squeeze in. All in all a very civilized way to ring in the new year.

And the new semester begins soon. I should be getting my marks (aka grades) from last semester pretty soon. I'm sure I did OK. I'm just really excited to get back into class. I really need to double check on the date I need to be there to enroll (note to self, email dept head re. date)

And Guy didn't win World Idol. But hey, at least that Kelly chick didn't win it (can you say 'no personality'?!?!) And I'm happy for Kurt, he kicks some serious ass. Shame most of America wont ever see him perform cuz he just ain't marketable enough for the American public.

We can finally buy our tix for Big Day Out. Rob had a work thing that he might have had to go to, but as it turns out it is being rescheduled.
Bands I'm really excited about seeing at BDO:
The Flaming Lips
Peaches (aka, the mouth-breather)
Severed Heads
Ahpex Twin
Magic Dirt
Gerling (again!)
Sonicanimation (again!)
and Cherry 2000 (a friend of a friend's band)
I'd really like to see The Tourettes (a goth metal band with a chick for a lead singer). But they are on at like 11am and that's just way to early for death metal.

anyway, I need to go get the rego sorted for my car. Fun stuff.
