Out of the Office Today
I am off today to the 'Read Aloud Summit'. It looks pretty good. I'm doing a workshop about educating parents on the importance of reading to infants. I'm also looking forward to a panel discussion about how to read aloud for 'maximum effect'. It should be interesting.
I'll let you know.

rock, rock, rock, rock, rock-n-roll iPod....
I've been wanting to knit a new iPod cozy for a while now. So I've been scouring the 'net for a pattern. But I wanted one that allowed me to access to wheel, view the screen and see if it was locked. Oh, and I'm way too cheap to pay for a pattern.
I found this awesome pattern(pdf) at Grumerina. It fit the bill, AND I already had the yarn required! whoo-hoo!
Here is a shot of the front so you can see the design.
It turned out pretty good for a first go. I'm planning on doing another one so I fix it up a little bit. I stuffed up when I sewed on the plastic that covers the screen (you can see the black stitching on the other photo). And I want to make some sort of pocket or something to hold my headphones. But I like the pattern a lot and think I might to knit a 'spring' version!!!

a modest proposal
OK, I've had it.
This is a truck. This is a station wagon. This is a Jeep.
And as such, I am going to start calling them 'trucks', 'station wagons' and 'Jeeps' respectively.
Not SUVs. Not 4WDs.
Somehow I just don't think they deserve some 'special' name that's been created by some marketing bigwig. Maybe if they are called what they really are it might take a little bit of the shine off of them, they might seem a little less trendy.
But that's just me...join me if you like...

I have been completely obsessed with 'Get Behind Me Satan' (the latest offering from the White Stripes) lately. I didn't want to like it. Really. I kept thinking, 'this one, this will be the one that will suck'. But it rocks. Jack sounds sexy and dark. Meg, well, her singing doesn't suck this time. There are shades of Led Zepplin, Tammy Wynette and maybe a bit of T. Rex. And some of it is even a little bit childlike at times. Who knew that Jack could play the piano? And now the 'My Doorbell' clip is out. Wow.
I will now let go and call myself a Stripes fan.

oh no not again
After the whole Minor Threat/Nike thing I guess I should not have been surprised by what's going on between Burger King and Slipknot.
It seems that big brains at Burger King are marketing to the kiddies by making up this fake metal band called 'Coq Roq' (yes, 'cock rock') that look suspiciosly like Slipknot (creepy masks, dreadlocks, tats etc) and Slipknot are not impressed.
Rock on Slipknot.
Now, admitadly I'm not a big fan of Slipknot's music (I can't name even one of their songs) but I'm really glad that they are not taking this lying down. I guess what this all boils down to is brand integrity. Slipknot have and their people have worked very hard to build the Slipknot brand. (not that their fans would like to think of them as a brand...but hey, that's life in the big city...)
Stay tuned....
And on a completely different note, I just found out that it's not 'God's Speed', but 'godspeed'.
go fig.

WTF?
Today Kris and I went out to lunch and we met up in front of one of the University bookshops. They were having a 'yellow book sale' Apparently all the math books are yellow, go fig.
But this title made me go 'huh?'
Now I'm sure 'Wiener Space' is some very fancy-schmancy math that my wee brain could not even begin to comprehend...but me, I go for the toilet humour.
wiener...huh huh, that's funny, huh, huh...
And where is 'Wiener Space'anyway?

oh, sparky...you are in trouble...
How have I lived my little life so long not knowing about stuffonmycat.com. Yes, stuff on my cat dot com. the cowboy one just kills me.
But I keep going back to the this pic. (yes, I know the boxes are empty, I'm sure the cat is OK) But look at the boxes. Bud Light, Coke, Marlboro Light, Fruit Loops, fudge round....and Special K... That's like ordering a big mac, large fries, chocolate sundae...and a diet coke...
Still a funny pic. (link from snarky, who shares my slightly sick sense of humour..)
And check it out, there's a 'stuff on my cat' Flickr pool!

bitch, bitch, bitch...
Voted best work of Australian fiction.
It is Thursday and in Sydney that means late night shopping. So I took the bus into the city to go to the Tapestry Craft SnB and to look at some last minute b-day gifts for the hubby.
Then at about 7 it was time to head home.
I walked over to the train station, went to the machine to buy a ticked, what did it say on the indicator? 'Closed', along with the 3 other ticket machines. (remember, its late night shopping, so veryone was in the city) So I queued up with 50 other annoyed commuters to the TWO open ticket windows.
When I finally did get to the platform (after the guy in front of me had to know every possible way to Hornsby from Town Hall and could he pay with a credit card too?? BAH!) Of course there was a train on the platform, just pulling out. bastards.
The indicator said that there was another train in 12 minutes. But then about one minute later a train pulled in. Wha???
It was just some random train that wasn't in the timetable at all. I hopped on the trian, crossed my fingers and got home sooner than I expected, but very annoyed by the whole experience.
If anyone else in the business world treated their customers like this they would be fired on the spot. But since they are the only game in town they get to treat up like crap. Go fig.
Bottom line, Cityrail sucks. And I need to start saving up for a scooter....

feelin' all retro
ok, ok, ok Bauhaus are are touring the US later in the year. Man, I'd love to see them, you have no idea. For those who don't know what the hell I'm talking about, Bauhaus were the godfathers of Goth music in the late 70's early 80's. And before you say anyhting, yes I know it is also a school of architecture.
Years ago I saw Peter Murphy play (at the Vic I think) and he just rocked.
At one point it the show the stage went dark except for one spotlight just above the mic at centre stage. Murphy saunted up to the mic, tipped his head to one side and said, 'Vigin Mary was tired', then the stage went black. (that's the first line from 'Rose Garden Funeral of Sores', a Bauhaus song). The audience just went off. Screaming, yelling, jumping up and down, etc. The stage lights came back on, after what seemed like 10 minutes in the dark with a crowd of insane fans, Murphy just laughed that laugh that only he can do and went into some other song.
what a tease.
but a good tease.
I really really wish I could see one of these shows. Maybe they will come down with the Big Day Out tour in January. Maybe? One can hope...Until then I just bust out with 79-83. (thanks for the heads up Done Waiting)

...I'm the best me in the world....
All the Aussies can skip this entry, it will just look like gibberish
OK, so I've been knitting this scarf (from Scarf Style) that I have dubbed the 'seaweed scarf':
Someone made the comment over at Flickr that they had knitted the same pattern and they thought it looked a bit like intestines. Then my bro thought that maybe I could knit a whole Slim Goodbody costume. (Aint he brilliant?)
Man, I haven't thought about good ole Slim in years. I so remember him from Captain Kangaroo.
ooh, ooh, and remember Picture Pages with Bill Cosby? 'Picture Pages, Picture Pages, time to get your Picture Pages, time to get your crayons and your pencils...'.
But anywhoo, Slim is still around. He is still in the organ suit and out there doing shows. The hair is a little less, well, fluffy. But he is still teaching kids about their body and all that stuff.
Thanks bro for that little shuffle down memory lane. I'm feeling all warm and squishy now, but that might be the chocolate and beer....

knitty photos, what do you think?
so Kris and I are planning on entering the Knitty calender contest (with a lot of help from Rob) and what better place to get out and knit than at the friggin' Sydney Opera House, right? So we packed up our knitting and Rob grabbed his fancy camera and took some awesome shots.
The above shot is one is my favourites.
But what do you think? Which one of these photos would you like to look at for a whole month? Pick your top three...

yet more knitting, and a question
This is a practice hat for my pregnant cousin. (ok not for her, but for the baby-to-be) I sort of just knitted it till it looked ok then decended at the top using the 'umbilical cord' pattern from the first Stitch and Bitch book. She's due in December and I figure she will need a few hats to keep the little guy warm and they should be a few sizes because babies grow pretty quick.
But my question is, how big is a newborn baby's head?
Is it like grapefruit sized or more teapot sized? Or is it bigger? Let's assume that she will have a normal sized baby. What I'd like to do is send her a set of hats that gradually get bigger, ya know?

more knitting stuff.
So my Mom clued me in last weekend that my cousin is preggers! And you know what that means...lots of baby knitting! So these links (here, here and here) are for future reference. But hey, who doens't love free knitting patterns?
But in my search I discovered Southern Cross Knitting, it's kinda link Knitty for those of us down under. You won't need to drool over yarn you can't get here or do any needle conversions!!!. (mucho thanks to Sarah Bradbury!)

Two words:
No, really, this one is too cool.
There was some ad being shot in San Francisco and a flickr photographer caught some amazing shots of the 100,000 balls being shot down a street. I just hope is isn't some photoshop hoax.....because man I am just lovin' this! (link from snarky)
Try this link if you don't have a flickr account.

only the knitters will get this
OK come on, you know that you too have secretly always wanted to do a Rowan style photo shoot, just admit it. Well, Kate's gone off and done it. I just had to giggle, the one of her 'climing' a rock just kills me. Just brilliant.
And Helen's new skull buttons would make the cardigan I'm planning to knit just look smashing. And I still have lots of fimo...
