June 27, 2006

I've put a couple of photos up from our trip.
They are mostly of friend's pets and food that we have eaten.
But there is a promised photo of a 'stretch hummer'. Yikes

Howdy

We are currently in Florida (temp 90F at 11am, humidity 9000%). Tomorrow we head off to the land of the big rat. I can't wait to ride a coaster or two.

We have eaten our weight in pizza and ice cream for sure.

Some things have been pretty much what we expected (lots of trucks, big green lawns, HUGE breakfasts). Some things were a little surprising like stretch Hummers, the price of real estate in Chicago, drug stores on every corner and the amount of patriotic magnetic ribbon things on cars. (photos to come)

But while I am on the topic of those patriotic magnetic ribbon thingos, they seem very, well, noncommittal to me. I mean you can just order one of these to shout out your issue de jour, slap it on your Ford for a year or so and then take it off when it no longer takes your fancy.
Bumper stickers stay on your car for years and years.
Now that's commitment.
Jeez.

(for the record, none of my family or friends have those magnetic ribbons.)

report from the field

Hello from sunny Seattle! (yes we did actually have a sunny day here).
What a beautiful city. We saw the Library (of course), Archie McPhee's (where I picked up the unicorn play set I've been wanting!!), the underground tour, lots of Mexican food and some local beer.

Today we are off to Illinois to hang out where it is a bit warmer than it is here (apparently it doesn't get 'summery' in Seattle until about late July).

More later (and some pics, promise!)

miscellaneous thoughts on our trip

We take off tomorrow.
Luckily I'm off today because I'm nursing a bit of a head cold so I have some time to shake it. (I plan on sleeping for the whole flight, that should fix me up!)

But here are some thoughts on this upcoming trip.

I expect to be asked if I've heard of Wolfmother (yes, and we are SO OVER them), told that those two trapped miners were on American TV (and no, Tasmania is nowhere near where I live) and informed that I have either lost of gained weight.

Besides seeing our family and friends, I'm really excited about going to Archie McPhee, seeing the amazing Seattle Library, checking out Millennium Park (with the big bean!), finally seeing Too Much Light, consuming lots of Ben & Jerry's, going back to the House on the Rock, seeing the new fancy shopping center in my home town and having some world famous Ann Sather's cinnamon rolls.

I don't expect to get any info on how the Socceroos are going in the FIFA world cup. (actually I expect that most Yanks wont even know that the world cup is on)

I probably wont post a lot while we are away. But I'll try to pop some pics up on flickr from time to time

*steps up on soapbox*

Ok, so get this.

LiveJournal will no longer allow members to have photos depicting breastfeeding at their default user pic.
If one is used you might get a nasty-gram from the management and risk having your blog suspended. Apparently the powers that be at LiveJournal think that photos of breastfeeding are 'inappropriate'.

These LiveJournal gits probably giggle if they see a woman's 'boobie' being used to nourish a child in public.

I knew things in the US were getting more conservative, but I can't believe that we are STILL discussing whether public breastfeeding is appropriate or not. What is this, 1952? Good gracious people.
I guess the whole Janet Jackson thing made the American media freak right out.

Here's the full story.

Thanks for the heads up, Stringy

our poor little gene pool

Today at the library someone left a mobile phone near one of the sofas.
It happens.

When we got it we decided to try to find out who the owner was but of course they didn't have 'home' or 'me' in their contacts list. (note to self: put home number in mobile)

So one of the staff suggested we ring the last number that rang the phone.
Good thinking 99.
We got in contact with the phone owner's brother.
And would he let the owner know that we had the phone?
'No worries!'

So our staff member stuck the phone in a drawer at the circulation desk satisfied that the owner would get her phone back.

A few seconds later guess what happened?
The phone rang.
It was the brother's number.
truly.

but then,
he left a message!
uuuhhhh.....ok.....

geez, I hope the sister got the brains in that family.
Fingers crossed.

aaarrrrrrrrr

Hey Sydney Photobloggers, look what I just found.
Seven deadly sins wristbands!

Shame I didn't find these before the Flickrace.

I am SO going to have to visit the Archie McPhee shop when we visit Seattle next week. I mean really, look at all of this pirate booty!

Hey Kris and Andrew, have you guys seen the 'Spelling Mistakes' pool over at Flickr? It is hilarious.

One of us should start a 'Punctuation Game' pool. (Sounds like a job for Dr. Amy Jones) A place where we can post pics of all of those apostrophe abominations(insert evil laugh here)
