more library geek stuff

Watch me go from normal person to super geek in 3.5 seconds....

OK, so at work we got to talking about how Sydney compares to LA County in size, population, etc.
Anyway, much to my surprize they are very close in square kilometers (both are just over 12,000 kilometers, see here and here)

whoda thunk?

But what's more interesting is the population density. Sydney is 345.7/km². But LA County is 967.9/km². Almost three times that of Sydney.
No wonder people are so tense in LA.

What? not geeky enough for ya? OK, watch this.

In LA County there are 89 public libraries but in Sydney there are 106 public libraries.(pdf)
So in LA County each public library is shared by over 109,000 people where as in Sydney each public library is shared by only 40,000 people.
Wow, we are really a very lucky city.

Biggest Loser #2

I just figured out tonight who Shannan reminds me of.
The was he talks he reminds me of Eric Bana's character 'Con' from The Castle.
He's almost a caricature of an Aussie.
I keep wanting to hear him say, 'The food was a credit to the airline'

Good god, I have to stop watching this show.....

Overheard at the library X3

1. Me: You have $4.50 in late fines on your card.
Customer: $4.50!?!?! I could have BOUGHT the book for that!!
Me: Really? I want to know where YOU shop, because that book cost us like $50 (ok, I didn't say that, but I wanted to)

2. Me: You have $6.00 in late fines on your card
Customer: $6.00 in late fines?!?! Every time I come in here I have late fines
Me: Well, if you turned your books in on time you wouldn't have late fines (ok, again, I didn't really say that, but I did think it....maybe she got my mental vibes....)

3. Customer: (to another customer) Have you read MAY-oh's Last Dancer? Oh, you simply must read MAY-oh's Last Dancer. You know, it's about Chairman MAY-oh?
Me: Mao, Chairman Mao....(ok, this one I did say, but I said it under my breath to my colleague)

what the?

OK, I'm not trying to be horrible, but what kind of name is 'Munnalita'? Were her parents trying to name 'Mona Lisa' but just mumbled it?
I just don't get it.

Australian for funny

I'm sure most of us have seen this one by now, but just in case you missed it, Steven Colbert has weighed in on the whole John Howard Barack Obama thing

No wonder Ben & Jerry's gave him an ice cream.

I was trying to think of something clever to say about this news article from New Zealand.

But what can you say about a story of a lawer that dresses like Alice in Wonderland when he's in court.

Not much really.
Happy Valentine's Day anyway...

(ok, ok, I GET why this guy feels the need to do what he's doing. He's making a point about the state of the legal system and the 'old boy' network and all. And I get this was a way to get some press about an issue that is close to his heart. Yes, I get it.
But come on, you have to admit, he looks pretty funny, doesn't he?)

IMHO

ok, I've always had a problem with the Grammy award for 'Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental'.

I mean come on, Jethro Tull won the first one in 1990, how could you take it seriously after that?

Sometimes I get the impression that the Grammy just dump all of the stuff in this category that they don't know what to do with, but they think is slightly important. Some past 'hard rock' winners have been Living Color, Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, the ever melodramatic Evanescence, Mettalica, and Soundgarden. Besides all having guitars, drums and lead singers, I don't think these bands have a whole lot in common stylistically

Maybe I just don't know what 'hard rock' is....

Is Wolfmother hard rock? I guess so. (ok, I'm not going to be horrible, congrats out to them)

funny thing happened on the way to the shops

So I need your help.

Today at lunch I was walking up to the shops and I found a dress.
Yup, a dress. It was just lying on a bench by a busy intersection.
Funny thing is, it's from a designer store that I know, it probably cost like $200 new, it's not some cheap target job. It is the strangest thing, it was just lying on this bench. I'm just picturing someone running around Mosman naked looking for this green dress....

Anyway, what should I do with it?

Should I take it to the store and see if it was maybe stolen? (there are no tags on the dress). Should I put up a sign and see if someone calls about it? Should I hang on to it and see if anyone puts up their own sign? Should I just take it to the dry cleaners and thank the Universe for the new frock?

Help me o' wise Internet peeps!
