just wondering
does anybody know what happens to sniffer dogs when they are decommissioned?

Funny you should mention that. Yesterday on Good Morning America, there was a segment on these 2 dogs over in Malasia (sp.?). They have been trained to sniff out certain chemicals used in DVD's and CD's. They showed them working at a big airport finding boxes and boxes of fake DVD's and CD's. ANYWAY, the bad guys have put out a hit on the dogs!!
