10 years + 1 day
Boy, it was ten years ago yesterday that we arrived in Sydney.
TEN YEARS!
Ten years ago we stumbled off of a very long flight, blurry-eyed but incredibly excited. It was a sunny Saturday morning in Sydney, chilly but beautiful.
We were told by some seasoned travellers that we should try to stay awake as late as we possibly could on the first day to try to get 'in sync' with the local time. But by like 6:00pm we were so tired we could barely think straight and just wanted to plop down in front of the TV and just chill.
Well.....
This show came on that was beyond explanation.
It was Hey Hey It's Saturday (Watch the Aussies say, 'oh good god no' and the Americans are say, 'What the hell is that?' )
Hey Hey was an Aussie variety show with music, interviews, lots of comedy, etc. But to say that Hey Hey It's Saturday was an Australian TV icon just doesn't even begin to cover it. It ran from 1971-1999, was completely live, and had more inside jokes than you can ever imagine.
But as we watched it with our very jet lagged minds we knew none of this......we were soooo confused.
I found a few clips from Hey Hey to share with the class:
-Every band that came to Oz played on Hey Hey. Here's Alanis, the it girl of the late 90's, belting out 'Thank You'
-They had a Gong Show type segments called Red Faces. This was a particularly funny act.
-But I think this one really illustrates the humour of the show. It is from the mid 80's with the host Daryl Somerstrying to explain cricket (watch the Americans get really confused!)
But what did we do to celebrate our ten continued years expatriatism? We went out in the windy Sydney weather to watch a very very French band play.
Slightly appropriate , no?

Thanks Tracey! We even got to see part of one being filmed. We got to be a little part of Aussie Tv history.
