Blog Action Day
So yesterday was Blog Action Day and I had an interesting experience that was strangely (and sadly) appropirate.
I had the day off so I wanted to go into the city and check out the Diana exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum (it's lovely btw, just to see the wedding dress was worth the price of admission). So after dropping some things off at the Vinnies I grabbed a bottle of water to drink on the ride in.
Well when I finished the water I looked for some place to appropriate to dispose of this bottle. Somewhere that it would get recycled.
Did the Powerhouse have any recycling bins? Nope
Pitt Street Mall? Nope
Strand Arcade? Nope
DJ's? Nope
Midcity Centre? Nope
The sushi place where I had lunch? Nope
I ended up bringing home this empty bottle and put it in my own recycling bin. How sad is that? I'm usually pretty good about bringing my own water bottle from home but from time to time I just want to have something to drink.
I don't think it's too much to ask to have some place to dispose of it properly. Don't you think?
But after all of this I started to look into this whole water bottle issue. Here's what I found:
To create one bottle of water, it requires 16 times its own volume in regular water source
In the US only about 12 percent of "custom" plastic bottles, a category dominated by water, were recycled in 2003 source
Plastic water bottles can take 1,000 years to biodegrade source
Contraty to popular belief, it IS safe to reuse plastic water bottles source
48 things to make from a plastic bottle (go the bottle rocket!)

Our shopping centre used to have a recycling bin next to the rubbish bin and tray return in the food hall, but they stopped doing that after too many people just chucked their rubbish in it. People are too slack to be bothered looking at which bin they're using, apparently :(
