Just so you know I'll soon be leaving Live Journal and joining the Movable Type family. The good thing is that I will have a lot more control of this here blog, the bad thing is that when I downloaded my archive I couldn't get the comments to come along. (if you know how to do it, can ya let me in??? Jim??? anyone???)
But don't worry, when I do the switch I'll post a link here for you. More later.
You know those non-skid mat things that you put in the shower? I want one that has either a strip of pumice or a section of some other sandpaper like substance in it. The way I see it, you could stand in the shower and and rub your foot back and forth on the rough spot and get rid of all those dead skin cells while waiting for your conditioner to work. (I am forver forgetting to use my little pumice stone)
So my hubby and I had this brilliant idea while we were driving idea home tonight. You know how there are WAY too many big ole SUVs (aka 4 wheel drives) on the roads here on Australian roads driven by smug suburban Mums? Well, I figured there has to be a way to get up their collecive nose.
So here is the plan. I am going to import the first Hummer to Sydney (for the Americans, no, we don't have them here) , I am going to paint it hot pink then paint a huge adultshop.com.au ad across both sides, the top, and maybe even the back window.(hummer, adult shop, get it?) I figure the sight of it will send the soccer Mums set just bonkers. Think about it. It IS an SUV, something they love, and the fact that it will actually be even bigger than their automobile, HA! But the fact that, gasp, it will be advertising S.E.X, yikes. Can't you just see me driving this big ass beast to work? Oh, it would be just brilliant.
Now if I can just figure out how to install solar panels onto it (I don't want to burn all that fuel after all).....AND get adultshop.com.au to pay for it....
Kelly, hey, listen, I have seen your new video and I think we need to have a chat, woman to woman. 5 words for you: "step away from the stylist". (LOOK AT YOURSELF,OK?) Now I know the retro 80's thing is all in and whatever, but take my word for it, this whole trashy Stevie Nicks/Prince/Madonna-wannabe look is not doing you any justice. Really. I'm sure you are just trying to break out of that whole 'girl next door' image and that's fine and we get it, you have an 'edge' but you are about three awards shows away from dressing (or UNdressing) like Lil Kim. Think about it....
(I just have to add that I don't normally even sit through an entire Kelly Clarkson video, but that outfit just grabbed my attention when it came on the other day. I thought it was a joke. Come on, you have to admit she looks silly. I'm going to go put on some Chemical Brothers or Dead Kennedys or something to cleanse myself)
I am on hold.
See, my oven stopped working last night (AFTER I made up a pizza from scratch and tried to cook it but the oven never quite heated up. Just for the record you cannot cook a pizza in the broiler (aka grill, the thing under the oven). I was planning on making some banana bread with the ever browning bananas in my kitchen but I think it will have to wait. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find someone who will come out and fix.....
OK, it is 3/4 an hour later. I've been on hold with 3 different places and Rob ended up finding some place that will come out..... late next week. Now it seems with the age of our oven it might just be easier and cheaper just to replace the whole oven. So we have to wait to see what the landlord wants to do. Hopefully I will get to bake something, oh, in a few weeks.
And they keep showing that bloody DJs clearance ad that I'm in. Thank god you can't tell it's me, how embarrassing would that be? It was like 100 years ago and my hair is so short! Yikes. (if you see a David Jones sale ad with a couple of people putting clearance signs in a show window, I'm the one carrying the ladder in my socks, that has to be some sort of health hazard)
1. Does anyone have a recipe for Hawaiian bread that doesn't involve a bread maker? I've had a hankerin' for it and Australians just look at me funny when I ask about it.
3. I don't know what freaks me out most about this video. The fact that the puppet's mouth doesn't match up with the singing, the overuse of weird wipes and fade outs, the bizarre set or the fact that they are all, well, INSANE! I mean really, is this whole thing meant to get little kids into their religion or give them nightmares? Really? (link from Snarky)
Happy Birthday to ME!!! Here is my loving husband last night enjoying his dinner at the world famous Rockpool. The food was pretty frickin' awesome. The standouts were the 'Tuna and Hiramasa Kingfish Sashimi With Rice and Pickled Cucumber Salad with Modern Sashimi Dressing' (that was my FAVOURITE!), 'Spring Bay Scallops with Sweet Corn Crepe with Fragrant Lemongrass and Mussel Butter' and the 'Warm Rhubarb, Raspberry and Praline Pudding with Vanilla Sauce'. Oh, and Neil Perry can sure design a great sauce. Rob also gave the latest Neil Perry book for my birthday. pretty swish really. And we were actually quite full when we left. Not what I expected from a fine dining estabilishment. Satisfied yes, full no. It has been a great birthday really. More pics of my birthday prezzies to come....
Sorry I've been a little MIA lately. I've picked up another class so I have even less free time. But that's cool, I'm inching towards my goal.
This weekend is my birthday. I can't believe it. What a year it has been. New job, the final Star Wars flick, the whole SnB Nation thing whoa.... But more importantly, guess what I'm doing for my birthday? The love of my life is taking me to Rockpool for a fancy-schmancy dinner. (That means we will have been to two of the three Australian restaurants on this list, we might need to go to Melbourne for our anniversary...well, there or Bray, Berks, England.) But I know to some Sydneysiders Rockpool might seem a little, well, passe, it has been around forever and a day, and Neil Perry, is a but up himself, but we all know the food is meant to rock. I'll let ya know.
But just in case you are looking for that last minute gift for yours truly, here's an idea for ya.... And just as I typed that line the Ipod ad with the new Gorillaz song on it came on, I wonder where I could go rollerskating...hmmm....(Link from Tankboy, who is cooler than you)
Damn, tuesday was Trent Reznor's 40th birthday and I forgot to send him a card. Let me just say that again. The first pin-up boy of industrial music is 40! Man, I don't feel so bad about 35....
Oh my god, 'Kitten War' is the cutest thing you will EVER see (Kris thinks her cat is gonna win over my cat, BAH! we shall see. But thanks for the link dude!)
Lots of love and happiness goes out to two of my most favourite couples in the world.
See, my grandparents are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Can you believe that? SIXTY YEARS! Wow, that is an amazing amount of time. When they got married bread cost $.09 a loaf, a new car cost $1,250 and the average income was $2,807/yr (all in USD). Things are a little more expansive these days, but they are still truckin' along. I wish I could be there for this big milestone, but I'm sure they know they are in my heart. (plus, I sent a card....I hope they get it this week)
And a big shout out (wow, look at me gettin' all ghetto) goes out my brother and sis-in-law on their big 3 year anniversary. When they got married, well, a two bedroom walk-up in their neighborhood cost $500K, now they cost like $650K.How times change. Jim and Amy are the coolest couple I know, and I am so honoured to be related to them.
Now that you are feeling all warm and fuzzy, your kitty moment of zen (or some of the The Hoff for ya instead)
Check out the time stamp on the ticket. Yup, we got up at 1am to see Star Wars. We aren't just dorks, we are dorks who can't plan ahead. But, I am SO glad we saw it on the first night. I really liked it a lot. I'd give it 3 1/2 out of 5. R2D2 was too funny, Yoda kicked some serious ass, the costumes were great, the action was full on and Anakin's transformation was intense (and a little sexy...) Now ok, yes, the 'romance' (and I put that in quotes because Lucas should just avoid doing and romance scenes in the future. They just come out way too wooden) scenes should have been left on the digital cutting room floor. And yes, Lucas is about as subtle as a sledgehammer when it comes to tying the films together. But hey, if you want a beautifully tender romance flick then go to a French film festival. So now we are sitting here watching the original Star Wars just seeing how it all ties together. Very interesting.
OK, so I had a look at those Chicago SnB buttons again and I thought they were those cool little ones but they are the big kind...I'm kinda rethinkin' this whole thing. What do you think? Would you wear one of those bigger buttons?
You COULD be like one of these whimps who chuck a sickie after going to the midnight showing of SWIII or you could just suck it up and drink a bucket of Coke (I will be in the latter group, so there!).
It hasn't been a good week. There has been a lot of stress at work. And just for the record, I'm just sick and tired of these tight-ass bitches complaining about owing like a buck five for some Lynda LaPlante crap they forgot was a week over due. Just cough up the cash, drive your BMW back to your $1.5M home and shut your cake hole, mk?
Ug, I hate it when I get like this.....moving on....
I was planning on vegging out in front of the telly tonight but my viewing choices are American Idol (will someone just smack Miss Country Barbie please) and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo (not as indie as it sounds, I assure you). Some day when you are older I'll explain why I hate bagpipes so much. Let's just say it involved a hangover that would stop an elephant and an early wake-up call. But, yeah, when planning my funeral, the bagpipes are out. (Rob is fully aware of this) Now I'm just waiting for my love to get off a business call so we can watch the retro TV version of Hitchhikers that I checked out of the library today (cheeze factor 500+!). Yes Kris, we still want to see the flick, we'll talk.
But hey, by mentioning the current knitting scandal I have had a spike in hits, so 'Hidee-ho' to any newcomers.
Think about it. They pop, float away, defalte. There is never a good outcome. (Now, I must admit that I did not make up this one, I heard it from a workmate years and years ago, but I do use it a lot. I don't want to be accused of falsely laying claim to a phrase....)
Ok, Sydney Knitters, I'm sure you know about the Stitch And Bitch controversy that is going on between the Chicago SnB (aka the underdog) and Sew Fast Sew Easy (aka the evil empire). And so I got to thinkin' about how to support the Chicago group and I thought I might order some buttons from them through cafe press. I really like the skull logo (it seems appropriate at the moment) and am wondering if I got a 10 pack would anyone want one or two? (and maybe split the costs...) Just let me know.
Oh and just another jab at the freaks at Sew Fast. If you google 'Stitch and Bitch' see what comes up first. (hint: it's NOT SFSE! So there)
One of the drawbacks of working at my library is that I never know what today is, but I know what three weeks from today it. See, we give a three week loan period on books and CDs and we stamp the books with the due date. So, all day today I was stamping 29 May 05. That just happens to be by birthday.
It is exactly three weeks until my 35th birthday.
There, I said it. It is out there like a wart on my finger. I think the only reason why this birthday bothers me is that by being 35 I will jump into the next age bracket. You know how when you fill out a questionaire and they ask you your age the groups tend to go 18-25, 25-34, 35-45. I am now clumped into that older bracket....hmmm...I don't really like that.....
But I'm in good company. Tori Amos is 42. Forty-frikin'-Two! And still sexy as hell. All is not lost.
I just got back from a felting class and boy are my arms tired. Really. It's a lot of rubbing and scrubbing, but I had a good time. I made this crazy multi-coloured scarf. Kris made a cool checkered scarf with pink accents to go with her new pink jacket. One of the gals in the class told me about this site. Man they make some groovy stuff in Germany. And I might just have to make a bracelet. or two....
I've been spending this morning at Tricks of the Trade. What an amazing bunch of info. But there is way too much info about 'nose oil'. (Link from Not Martha)
So we are going to celebrate the release of the new Harry Potter book with a train ride to Hogsmeade. How cool is that? That has gotten me thinkin' about a costume. (Rob's going as a Muggle, complete with cap!) I want to go as Madame Pince the librarian. Then i can use it at work for our Harry Potter party that we are planning, good fun! So, I've ordered the hat (it will need few feathers I think) and I have a long black satin skirt so now I just need a really groovy black velvet jacket with sorta puffy sleeves and lots of buttons down the front. I might need some cat eye glasses too....Maybe some thrifting is in order as well. Sounds like I need to do a spot of shopping. (This is really the only photo of the film version of Madame Pince that I can find, so I'm taking a bit of artistic license.)
OK man, this is freakin' me out. I have a friend in the top 10 charts. The drummer of Mudvayne (Matt McDonough) actually introduced me to my husband, aint that just nutty? See, Matt and I were very good friends in high school but before he lived in Peoria he lived in Rockford, where my hubby is from. Rob was older (he was at University) and living in Chicago when we were still in high school, so whenever Matt and I would drive up to Chicago to see a concert we would stay with his old friend Rob. So if it weren't for Matt I would have never met my lovin' hubby.
I'm so proud that his band is doing well. I know how hard he worked all those years. Rock on!!!
Rob and I went hiking with Kris and Rodd yesterday. Boy it was way too beautiful, but I'm a wee bit sore today. I guess I'm more out of shape than I thougt. oh well.
What a crazy week. My supervisor is still out sick so I'm still holding down the fort with all the stuff for the kiddies (story times, crafty stuff, a visit to the zoo, even a safari party) And I haven't been sleeping very well. The cat has been very, well, nocturnal lately, and on top of that I'm PMSing up the wazoo. So, I'm a little wiped out. (that is SUCH an understatement) But hey, I still made it to the gym twice this week, so there.
Anyway, today my boss came into the office to tell me that the gal I'm fillling in for rang today (in case you don't know, I've been filling in for a gal that is on maternity leave. In Australia you can take up to a year off in maternity leave, and she is due to come back at the end of May, but everyone in the office thought she would not come back.) Well, as it turns out she wants to come back, but only part time. AND she is pregnant again. I'm totally cool with working part time because then I can go to school full time. But what concerns me is what if she comes back, I sign up for classes and agree to work part time, then she up and quits because it is too hard with a baby and another on the way and work, ya know? But is my work going to have to find someone full time? Do I still get holiday pay if I'm part time? And what happens when she goes off to have this baby? I guess we will have to work out the finer details next week. I'll try not to stress too much.
But now for something completely different. If you need a giggle and don't offend too easily go check out porn bread. Too funny. At least in my sick little mind.
So there is this song that is getting a lot of air play here. It is a cover of an Aussie classic called 'Evie pt. One'.
The chorus goes 'Evie, Evie, Evie let your hair hang down'. But when the singer says 'Evie' it comes out sounding like 'Ev-AH' and Rob thinks it sounds like he is saying 'Ebay'. And so we have been making up our own lyrics that make it sound like an Ebay ad like 'Ebay, Ebay, sell they stuff that you don't use' and 'Ebay, Ebay, get yourself a real good deal'. I just can't here the song anymore without giggling.
Cool, one of those blue wrist band thingos that I would actually wear.
I had the girls (and Clinton) over yesterday to watch Craft Corner Deathmatch yesterday. I agree with Kris that the host is utterly annoying (and WAY too condescending) and should be replaced by some witty drag queen in a handmade frock, but other than that, I quite enjoyed it. I think if they choose the projects wisely they will get some pretting interesting stuff. And I really like the little vignettes about the crafts and the history lessons (the history of the rhinestone was very cool). I think once they work out some of the bugs (maybe they could spend more time talking to the judges and less time on the host) it has the potential to be some really fun TV. I'm going to keep watching cuz I want to see Jenny Hart and Ertha Kitt as judges, meow!
Hey Aussies, have you seen the new ANZ ad? They show a bunch of robots answering their helpline calls. There is a Dalek and Robby the Robot, but there is this one in the front with a female voice that I can't seem to place. Anyone out there know what I'm talking about? I know I'm going to kick myself when I find out what robot it is, but at this point I'm just stumped....
I did it, I started a sleeping cat pool at flickr. go forth and post, pretty please....(I just re-titled the flickr pool at 'sleeping kitty yoga', like it?)
I had to add something about the camel suit incident, just incase you missed it.
So, what are you doing next Saturday (the 16th) around 2ish? If you are in Sydney and interested in seeing Craft Corner Deathmatch then you should be at my place. My wonderful MIL has been taping it for me and I just got episodes 1-3 in the mail this week. So if you are interested just let me know and I'll give ya directions (we do have a kitty, so if you are allerigc, well, maybe next time....sorry....)
So we got up this morning in did something we haven't done in a long time We went to the gym. We kinda got out of the habit when I went back to school and switched jobs. But Rob's been bitchin' about his weight (I know, I know, he's nuts) and I'm sick of hearing about it, so bada-bing-bada-boom we have a 10 pass to the gym and a commitment to each other that we are going to go on a regular basis. I must admit I'm feelin' a bit stiff (mostly in my forearms, which means I'm over-gripping) and I have one really sore toe (very tight climbing shoes) but overall I'm feeling pretty good.
Does anyone know how to reknit an old sweater (aka jumper)?
I found this really great Country Road 100% wool sweater at a thrift store over the weekend but it is really long. I just want to shorten it. At this point I figure I'll just pick up the stitches just above where I want it to end, unravel it below that point, recycle the wool, and I guess then just put the picked up stitches onto some needles and knit a few rows.
Does that sound right? Has anyone out there done it before?
Everyone keeps giving me shit because I have been talking about this paralysed guy who had an implant in his brain so he can turn his Tv off and on. (among other things) Rob asked me if I heard about it on April 1st. (ha ha very funny.) And one of the guys at work said, 'oh, that's impossible, don't believe everything you see on the internet'. Well is the BBC a reputable enough source for ya? How about CNN? Or maybe Dateline Alabama is more your speed....BAH!
Anyway, I find this story fascinating and I can't wait to hear more about it. I mean think about it, this could do for paralised people what the Cochlear Implant did for many deaf people. this could change the game. wow.
I would really like to knit this top (NOT the matching poncho mind your) but a few things are standing in my way:
1. the yarn had been discontinued
2. the pattern book is out of print (oh, but I can buy it for like $95! Yikes, I don't want to make it THAT badly)
3. The pattern is in French.
Maybe I'll just save a copy of the picture and try my hand at designing a pattern myself. hmmm......(beautifully knitted by Fluffa!)
Oh and while we are talking knitting, Teva at Loop-d-Loop has finally put up a proper shop so you too can knit her cool as hell designs. Go forth and covet! (oh, and Kris, she does wholesale...just so ya know...)
LOOKIE! It's a statue of my kitty! (ok, it's really a statue honoring his breed, but hey, you know how much I like big cheezy statues. right?) Man I *heart* flickr
OK, I don't mean to toot my own horn but I picked up the Winter 04/05 Vogue Knitting International and they have a review Stitch N Bitch Nation. One part of the review says:
...it's the cheerier fare that mose intrugues. Standouts include dolls in the likeness of musicians Joan Jett, oey Ramone and Henry Rollins; a tea cozy that says 'Coffe tea or me?...
colour me stoked!
And there is a snippit about this really cool exhibit about Mr Rogers. You have to see it to believe it. I might just have to knit a cardigan next.....(for the Aussies: Mr Rogers was this children's television host for over 30 years. He was the most gentle soul ever. And he always wore a cardigan. I actually cried when I heard about his death in 2003)
Kris and Rodd had a sort of anti-Easter dinner at their place and I wanted to make something to go with the theme and didn't these little guys just turn out great? I love the beady red eyes (mini MnM's). And they taste good too!
Big hugs and lots of love go out to Jim and Amy today. See, they lost their beloved pup Henry Hooligan to a mystery illness. She had been pretty unwell for a week or so and just never improved. Jim and Amy are both the biggest animal lovers you will ever meet so I can't imagine how hard this must be for them. If you have ever dropped into their blogs please stop in again and lend them a little love.
And Henry, wherever you are, I hope the snow is fluffy, the food is hot and there are lots of faces to lick. Take care ol' girl. You will be missed.
So we are about to come up to what they call the 'Easter Racing Carnival'. Bascially there are a bunch of horse races coming up and they need to make money on them. The powers that be try to promot this whole thing to women with the angle "hey look, go out and buy a pretty frock and hat and come to the races with your girlfriends, it'll be great!". (Yeah, whatever. We know you guys just want us to drop money on your nags and buy over priced sparkling wine.) But anyway... They have this commercial on TV with this lady getting dressed in this fabulous frock and there is this great song playing in the background. It took me a while to find out who does the song but it is British singer Kirsty MacColl and the song is called 'In These Shoes'. Here is the bit they use on the ad:
I once met a man with a sense of adventure He was dressed to thrill wherever he went He said "Let's make love on a mountain top Under the stars on a big hard rock" I said "In these shoes? I don't think so" I said "Honey, let's do it here."
It's kinda jazzy and she has lots of attitude. Think sort of Blossom Dearie crossed with Bette Midler with a little South American spice thrown in. As I found out she has been around for a gazillion years, worked with just about everybody (Talking Heads, The Smiths, and the Pogues to name a few), and is unfortunately no longer with us. I think I'm going to go out now and see if I can find a bunch of her music (maybe we have some at the library). I know there are some people who will be amazed that she is new to me, but lay off, I never saw Buena Vista Social Club, ok?
My point is, (yes, thers is a point) don't you just love it when something like this happens? Here is this b.s. ad for horse racing but out of it people (like me!) all over Sydney are discovering this groovie singer that they somehow missed up to this point.
-gg
(just as an aside, as the actress in the ad is zipping up her dress you can see that she is wearing hotpink undies under a white beaded dress, now maybe it's just me but I would never in a million years wear pink undies under a white dress. Who's with me?)
OK, ok, ok..this one is too good, and you'll only get this if you are, ahem, of a certain age
Fergie of The Black Eyed Peas was Stacy from Kids Incorporated. Can you believe it? AND she was the vioce of Sally in three different Charlie Brown TV specials in the 80's. (heads up from Go Fug Yourself)
I have been searching high and low for a particular t-shirt. I want a solid v-neck T with little puffed sleeves. Something fitted that isn't cropped. I've seen a few people wearing them but I can't find one to buy. If I could find it I would get one if every colour. (ok, grey, black, white, pink maybe....) But alas it just not seem to exist. Maybe I should hit Chinatown.
CALLING ALL SYDNEYSIDERS:
Specifically those who live in the city. Mr GG and I are do a bit of research and we need your help. If you live in the inner city:
Where do you live? Rent or own? What do you love/hate about your area? Have you lived in any other inner city areas that you liked more or less?
Thanks guys!!!!!
The Sydney SNB was on TV Friday. I, being the dork that I am, missed it. But web-goddess to the rescue! She has a copy for your viewing pleasure.
and above is a pile of squares for a sampler throw for the 'new look' livingroom. It is made from 8ply merino (undyed)I picked up cheap a craft show. I want to use this project to learn some new stitches (maybe some fancy cabling...) and practice my stitching up skills.
There is this TV show here called Inspector Rex. It is a Russian cop show with car chases, bad guys and stacks of suspense. Sounds like every other Law and Order you have seen, right? Wrong buddy boy. See Inspector Rex is a dog. And I don't mean a skirt chaser, I mean a biscuit eating, butt licking, fur faced German Shepard.
I have not managed to sit through an entire episode (the subtitles at 10pm are kind of hard for me) so I can't tell you what it is like, but apparently lots of people love this 'crime busting canine'. I just don't get it....
I just had to add a link to this pattern that Kris posted. Ain't they cute! I have had this fantasy to put together a knitting book of 'cozies': tea cozies, beer cozies, ipod cozies, etc. I never even thought of a 'Cadbury Egg cosy'! hmmm....
Just in case you were wondering, one does not "use an apostrophe for plurals of shortened forms" of words (at least according to Deakin Uni). So the plural of CD is CDs and DVD becomes DVDs (not CD's or DVD'd). The only reason I'm posting this is because on the wall of my library, the sign reads "DVD'S" and it really bugs me.
There was this stinky guy in the library today. Now like all public libraries we get our fair share of, shall we say, eccentrics, but this guy decided to park himself smack bang in the middle of the children's library to sort his considerable pile of paper. Now that would have been ok exccept for two things; 1. I needed to do some shelving in the kids area and there was no possible way I could brave the smelly mix of muscle cream, urine and mold. 2. He felt the need to confront anyone who wanted to look at the picture books by informing them that he was a 'Russian fighter pilot' and ask them, 'hey, what are you?' (quite deep really).
So today I ended up with my high school fight song stuck in my head today (I guess all those Friday afternoons when they yanked us out of class for the pep rallies affected me) but I could only think if the first verse. Horrors! So of course I had to look it up and find out the whole thing, right? (it's the second one) I found out two interesting things about the song. First, it was written by Lawrence Fogelberg, Dan Fogelberg's father. (if you don't know who I'm talking about, ask your parents, they will know) Second, it is no longer called a 'fight song', it is called a 'pep song'. (Please!) And get this, they changed my high school colours! They used to be blue and gold but now they are blue and gray. Yuck!
For the record I was not really into high school. I think I made it to 4 or 5 football games in my time and I was never on student council or anything, but we were required to learn the fight song (I think there was even a test). Go fig.
I asked my Mom to bring one of these 'twirl and whirl' thingos from the States. He has ignored all of the actual cat toys on the ends and just chewed on the structural bits. Go fig. -gg
Dear Martha, I know you have been in prison for the last few months so you are forgiven for not being up on the latest trends and all.... and rumour has it that it was knitted by your fellow inmates... but listen to me very closely, step away from the poncho. Take if off, hand wash it in homemade lavender wool wash, fold it and wrap it in tissue then stick it in your hand carved cedar hope chest and just forget about it. Truly. You'll thank me later. Yours, -gg
ok, is this a JOKE? Shannon Noll just beat out Eminem, Usher, and Robbie Williams for the 'Best Male Vocal' award at the Aussie MTV VMAs. Good lord. Do you think that gave it to the person that was actually available to pick up the statue. Get real. I'm going to bed.
A little history lesson for all those fashion victims out there (I swear I'm going to print this article out and give it to the kiddies at the mall. Ironic that it comes from 'The OC, no?)
OK, I know I've been a little MIA lately. My Mom has been here and I'm still getting over this blasted flu. ug. But we did manage to squeeze in some touristy stuff. We went to the Sydney Observatory, watched lots of Kath and Kim, saw a drag show and hung out at Doyle's. This little guy (above pic) came to eat some grapes and taunt the cat, very cute.
More later, the hubby says I need some rest.
Sorry I've been so absent lately. My Mom is here from the US for a couple of weeks so we are hangin' out in Sydney. It's kinda cool when someone comes to visit you where you live. It allows you to visit all those touristy places you never go to. Ya know? Yesterday we went to Fair Day. (in between the storms, man it never rains in Sydney but the last two days have we have had crazy storms!) Today we are off the city to do a spot of shopping, she wants to see the QVB and I still haven't been to the new and improved Tapestry Craft (very slack of me, I know.) Any maybe just maybe, we will get our new sofa this week.....I should really call Freedom this morning.....
If Meg or Rebecca from the Sydney SnB are reading this, could you email me please. I'm trying desperately to get in touch with you guys (are either, or both, of you going to Harts on Monday?)
Be sure to pop over to Kris' blog and see her 'sexy geography teacher cardigan'. It is the coolest/dorkiest thing I have ever seen in my entire life! Truly.
SOFA UPDATE: They are meant to be delivering the sofa this week! Whoo-hoo! I'll be sure to post pics.
So tonight I saw on the news that Prince Charles is going to marry his 'long time companion' Camilla Parker Bowles, and we all know that 'long time companion' is code word for, ya know.
So I guess I was right. Ms. Bowles is really a GUY!
OK, I'm in need of a little rant right now, and since this is my blog, I'm gonna go for it.
Bloodly school. They have canceled 2 of the three classes I am meant to take this semester. The head of the department quit without warning on Monday (the first day of the semester). so I kinda understand why everything is in a state of flux, but man, I just want to take more than ONE bloody class, ya know? So instead of going to class tonight I spent an hour and a half trying to get this shit sorted out.(after a full 8 hours a t work, mind you) Man, I paying them all this money and all........Mr GG and I have been having the worst karma lately. Between our sofa crap, his camera crap, and now this crap with school....aaahhhh!!!....I swear we have pissed someone off. And have I mentioned that no one (and I mean NO ONE) in the North Shore area sells box fans. We just want a stinkin' fan to put in the window.
OK, I feel better. I'll do a normal post tomorrow. I'm gonna go have a beer and watch ER (and Extreme Makeover)
So you are bored with your current vocation and looking for something new to make a quid. You think, "hey I"d make a pretty kick ass burlesque performer". But your dreams of pasties and fisnets could be dashed if you don't come up with just the right name. Don't dispair grasshopper, Empty-Handed has come to your rescue with one and only Burlesque Name Generator. Be sure to give the little people some props when you do make is as Madam Ambrosia Galore.
OK, so we sorted out the sofa situation. We have gone from Paprika to Aubergine (aka rusty red to dark purple) coloured fabric. Fingers crossed we will have it within the next week or so. And as it turns out, some of the accessories in our place actually go with new colour a little better. I just didn't want a sofa that was in such a trendy fabric. I'm just worried that in 3 years it will look very dated. Ya know? I guess we could just have it recovered at that point.....I know, I worry too much.
Mr and Mrs Web-Goddess have set a date for their reception, and I'm on the decorating committee. So we are off to Spotlight and IKEA on Friday to craft some clever Vegas themed centerpieces. And while we are on the subject of craftiness, I was at Lincraft today and they are having a hell of a sale. ALL of their fabric is 1/2 price. Can you believe it? I made some awesome curtains for like $15 today. If you can find something you like in there, you'll get a hell of a deal.
And I'm back to school tomorrow. I'm at the 1/2 way mark in my course (but the last semster is mostly work-study) and I'm trying to decided if I want to go onto the university course after this one is over. I can do it by distance study and it shouldn't by too taxing. But I am excited about this semester. I have a database class, aquisitions, and serials. Should be interesting.
From Hell is on tonight. Johnny Depp all scruffy and off his dial on absinth. Yummy.
I'm going to Freedom Furniture to pick a new fabric for my sofa that I ordered 4 weeks ago. Apparently the the entire country is out of the fabric I like in 'paprika'. Go figure. I wonder if I'm going to have to wait another 4 weeks for them to make this sofa. Figures. My Mom is coming for a visit in a few weeks and I wanted to have this all sorted before she came down. ('sorted' meaning having the sofa delivered and having the cat used to new intrusion in his life) And on top of that, I've already bought cushion covers to match to new sofa (from Freedom). I wonder if they will match...but don't place any bets....oh well.
So at the library we have a toy cupboard. Nothing too snazzy. Some puzzles, wooden blocks and some of those wooden bead frame thingos. Anyway, I am trying to decided which is sadder, that I had to put a sign on the cupboard that reminds parents to put the toys away when they are finished or the fact they they regulary ignore the sign and leave the toys scattered all around the library. truly sad.
And I just had to add this to my rant on freaky kids names. When I met a child named 'Chynna' (pronounced 'China') today I thought that would be at the top of my weekly list of messed up names. But oh no, I work in a neighbourhood where 'more money than sense' is the mantra. This afternoon I actually met a child named Rocco Rizzo. No lie. I mean really, was the mom watching Grease when she was in labour or something? Really?
I am sitting here watching Outfoxed. Now I know that this film has a slanted view, but I am SO glad that I moved out of the US before Fox News (and I use the term 'news' very loosely) really got off the ground. Man, those people are NUTS! Do people really watch this shit and believe it? And what is up with that O'Rielly guy? He is down right insane. He reminds me of Morton Downy Jr (and don't even get me started on Geraldo...hey dude I have a safe in my basement for ya!). But what scares me is that people buy this crap and don't think that they are being fed propaganda. It's all opinion instead of fact, and that is NOT news. Lordy
I have the hiccups. Again. For the 3rd time today. I think I might be a little stressed out about work and school and a million other things ( and maybe I'm just a little hormonal...).
Anyway, we have a Pirate Party coming up at work (for the end of our Summer Reading Program) and I've decided to go as a actual female pirate. I've chosen Anne Bonny. She kicked ass and took names! She even has an action figure! (how cool is that?) Anyway, I thought I should come as some historical pirate instead of just a generic one, ya know?
And Kris is right, even we are watching the tennis....
Oh, come on now....did they learn nothing from Elektra or Catwoman? They should just leave Aeon Flux alone. But I wonder if she will talk? Probably....there is no way the US public would sit through a 2 hour film with no dialogue. bummer.
Well, the 2005 bloggie nominations are up, And while most are pretty expected (GO DOOCE!) I did find one little gem. I am shocked and amazed that I have never read this blog before. Bizgirl is a cool-ass Kiwi Librarian. It's nice to know that the same library craziness happens on both sides of the Tasman . Unfortunately she just got dooced, so if you happen to know any Library gigs going in the Wellington area, ya might drop her a line......
(wow, that's TWO Dooce references in the same post, I gotta get out more.)
Oh, and I just wanted to mention Monday's SNB again. Just in case ya missed the open invite.
tuna, tomato, green beans, spanish onions, potatos, artichoke hearts, olive oil and fresh black pepper. The green beans and potatos were cooked and the whole thing was served chilled.
That's what made up the salad I had on Australia Day. Damn it was yummy. I just wanted to type it here so I could keep it for future reference.
Rob just posted this photo. I thought I'd share it with all of the Aussies who could not be here on the big day. Can't ya just smell the onions? Have a great day!
-gg
(oh, and BTW, and like to thank my brother for getting this freakin' song stuck in my head! schni, schna, schnappi...)
HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY! Rob and I spent our first Australia Day as Aussies in pretty good style. We watched the parade of tall ships, walked across the Harbour Bridge, had a boozy lunch at Darling Harbour and then took the train home for afternoon naps. Now we are going to have some pies and beers for dinner. (then maybe some ice cream, mmm)
if I see one more person (over the age of 4) in a friggin' PONCHO I'm gonna explode. so there.
And while I'm at it, I'm really sick of people naming their kids crazy sh%t. Come on now, what if little Tiger Amerika Fuscia wants to become a judge? or a doctor? Really? OK, maybe it's just me.....
oh, and does anyone want to go Hart's for the Monday the 31st for the Stitch N Bitch? I'm planning on going with some gals from work. aw, come on, ya know you want to.......
This awsome link from Kris. I must admit that I am still really crap about sending thank-you notes (sorry...) And since we are in Sydney, we don't have to worry about #7 (knowing how to calculate a tip) and I take issue with #9, if you don't want to wear high heels why should you have to learn to walk in there. But if you do want to walk in high heels (Julia Roberts, are you listening?) then by all means get it together.
BUT, I could write a whole post about #4 (learning how to walk!!!) Rob and I have decided that we are sick of being nice to rude people on the footpath (sidewalk). People who just meander from side to side, walk three people abreast, talk loudly about this and that on their mobile phone and those who keep their headphone on when they are being served by someone (like a friendly neighborhood library assistant!!!). SO unless you are under 15, read the rules and pull your thumb out!
On a more serious note, I just love it when my SIL goes off on Bush. She points out just how, well, offensive, it is for Bush to be throwing Wank Fest 2005 while the death toll from the tsunami just topped 250,000. ug.
I forgot to post this ages ago. This is our new car (it's not quite so new now...) Boy, I really should wash the car today, it looks really pretty when it is actually clean...lol...
I just updated the Sydney Stitch N Bitch web site. The calendar is actually current *gasp*!!!(and hey Mom, it looks like you will be able to go to a few SnBs)
Cool, things are back and running. I know there has been like 100 things I wanted to post over the last day or two but as I'm sitting here I can only think of a couple of things........
1. I had to give the kitty a bit of a haircut this weekend. Around his backside. Things were, shall we say, sticking to his fur. It's like what the ranchers do to the sheep. I think it did the trick because hasn't scooted at all (that I have noticed.)
2. OK, I don't want to link back to these images because I don't want to embarrass (or piss off) the person who went to all the trouble to knit these pieces but go over to Flickr and search for 'knitting' in the tags and look through the images till you find the sweater with a felted heart (as in human heart) on it. I love the concept, knitting the parts of the body onto the part of the sweater that covers that part of the body (heart, lungs, hands, etc) but the knitting is poor and the colours are ugly. yuck. Good concept, bad execution.
3. I want my sofa NOW. I wont have it till at least next month, but I SO want it now......grumph....very cranky..../temper tantrum
How lazy am I? I am FINALLY posting this photo of myself with children's author Graeme Base when he visited our library way back in November. He was so cool. Yes, I am a geek.......
It is Thursday night and I'm sitting here with beer in the fridge, fake tattoo on my left bicep, and the next three days off of work. I love the looking forward to having three full days stretched out in front of me.
And, on top of that, I had a great day at work. I think that is the first time in my life I've been able to day that (ok, maybe the first time in over a decade). I really like what I do for a living. I love that I'm having an affect on kids. That what I do hopefully gets kids excited about reading and coming to the library. And if that in turn gets them to be life-long readers then I can feel pretty good. ya know?
This link is mostly for my Mom (she's coming for a visit and I"m coming up with stuff for us to see). But it is too funny and I thought I should share it with the class. Australians have this strange affection for 'big things' and I love it!
I just got this link off of Kris. It is a bunch of before/after satellite shots of the devastation caused by the Asian tsunami. Wow. I mean you know in your head that lots of stuff got washed away. But here you can see the houses, parks, roads, etc in the 'before' shots that could be any neighborhood anywhere. Then, well, just brown mud. Wow. Some of the imagesfromBanda Aceh have really floored me. These people are gong to need a lot of money to rebuild.
On a happier note, Australia donated over $15 million dollars last night when the three major TV networks ran a so-called 'star studded' telethon. And that money is on top of the $120 million already donated by the Aussie public to various aid agencies. Right now I am very proud to be an Australian citizen. (I think I'll sort that passport stuff out today...)
Sparky really is Australian. See, he's watching the cricket! Bad joke I know....but what he's really doing is watching his kitty DVD that has birds, fish, and yes, crickets on it. (see the brown cricket on the left hand side of the screen?) I'm pathetic I know.
Oh, I forgot, this link ROCKS! You put in what you have in your bar (vodka, apple juice, whiskey, Mad Dog 20/20, whatever) and it tells you what drinks you can make out of the stuff you have. How cool is that? (Kris, I thought this was right up your alley)
I feel like a real grown up tonight. We bought a proper sofa today. We got The Memphis, aint it purdy? No, not in the white, it is going to be "paprika", aka red, And we got the it with a chaise at one end and wooden legs instead of the metal ones. It's gonna take a few weeks before we can actually get it, but it was on sale so i guess I can wait. (So Mom, when you come down we will have to go accessory shopping. And maybe look for a new coffee table....Shame, huh?)
Since everyone and their brother is doing a top whatever things of the year, I thought I should join in on the fun. So, in no particular order are my top achievements and experiences of 2004.
Seeing the Flaming Lips twice in 2 days. (they rock!)
OK, so if someone (namely my Mom) would happen to pick up one of these and bring it to Sydney at some point, that would be very cool. I'm just sayin'.......( I heard they are under $10 at Target and Walmart, I'm just sayin')
OK, I know this is an old pic of the kitty, but I just love it. It cracks me up every time. He just looks like he has been impaled by the table leg. But he's OK, I promise....
A while back I wanted to get this Law and Order book for my Mom as a gift (saying my Mom likes Law and Order is like saying that J.Lo. is fond of a wedding. You get my drift) Anyway, the book was out of print so I ordered it through a used bookstore from Amazon. Well, the used book store emailed be to confirm all my details (me being in Australia and her being in the US) and I told the nice customer service lady that the book was a gift for my Law and Order crazed mother. Well as it turns out the nice customer lady is a big fan too. She actually had a signed poster of Jerry Orbach hanging above her desk. I was impressed. And the book got there in time.
I wonder how they are going to handle this on the show......hmm.....
A fun little exercise that I picked up from Kris who got it from Kristen. First you clear your address bar then type in each letter of the alphabet and record the first site that pops up. Here goes:
I just want to share this link with the class. It's a great place to start if you are looking for all kinds of info. Try the 'Ready Reference & Quick Facts' to look for an atlas or almanac if want to know something more about the countries affected by the tsunamis. (I must admit this is where I went to find out more about Brunei).
I'm sitting here watching the CNN feed (on channel 7) about the Tsunami that hit southern Asia. Boy, I'm thankful Rob's not in India THIS week. I just hope they have overestimated the death tolls. It's really hard for me to wrap my head around all of this. When you see the maps of how far the earthquake was felt you just get this whole new respect for Mother Nature. wow. A million people are now homeless in Sri Lanka, one of Rob's staff is from Sri Lanka, he just got back a few weeks ago. I hope his family is OK. They were just talking to one tourist and he said that at the hotel in Phuket where he was staying, right after the waves hit he saw a great white shark swimming in the hotel's pool! wow. And at least 5 Aussies are missing. Let's hope they make it home ok.
This is very surreal.
Here we are with Kris and Rodd at Taronga Zoo on Christmas Day. We saw the chimps, meerkats (my personal favourites) and some really huge pelicans (not to mention all the roos, koalas and the emus that scrared the crap outta Kris). After that we ventured back to our place for way too much food. (enchiladas, Spanish rice and lots o' nibbles) and then onto dessert. The Snook made this amazing fruit pudding thing (not American style 'pudding', this was like a cake filled with fruit) and I made my very first pavlova and as Rob said, I 'nailed it', it turned out so perfect. I almost want to make another one just to be sure I've got it down, ya know? Then we settled in for a viewing of A Christmas Story'(since we don't have it on a 24 hour loop here).
Oh, and there are more pics to come. I'm just trying out this whole Flickr thing, Rob seems to like it, so I'm giving it a whirl too. So the pics might look a little different till I get it all sorted out.
I think I know what I'll be doing the second half of July....(yeah, me and Kris, My Mom, Helen, the girls at work, etc)
And I hope this doesn't come out sounding, well, horrible, but I'm reading The DaVinci Code at the moment (yes, I know, better late then never) and, well, are you meant to figure out all the clues pages before charcters do? Are they meant to be that clueless? Now I'm only half way through, so maybe it gets harder later.....And maybe I'm just annoyed because the most over rated actor in the US has the lead roll.... (in best 'fat comic book store guy' voice) 'Worst casting ever!'
This one is making the rounds at LJ, but I nicked it from .
If you reply to this post with a comment:
1. I will tell you some positive things I think about you. 2. I will tell you what song(s) remind me of you when I hear it/them. 3. I will tell you what celebrity/public person you remind me of, (personality-wise or looks-wise). 4. I will tell you one word that I associate with you when I think of you. and if you feel like spreading good cheer because we can all use a boost now and then; 5. Why not copy and paste this into your journal and make someone's day.
You are a true Chicagoan! You've probably lived here for a long time, or are thoroughly obsessed with the city and its history. Congratulations! Maybe you should run for office.
My favourite bar in Sydney closed. (OK, it didn't close, it went through a 'management change') In a sea of pretensious watering holes, The Century Tavern was different. It was a seedy dive without being scary. It was like family friend who knows all your secrets and likes you anyway. I loved everything about this place. From the dangerously steep stairs to the smoke stained photos (of old time movie stars none the less!). The Century was wasn't out to impress, just offer a place to have a sit and a beer. It was the only bar in Sydney that I have found that had a working jukebox, pool tables, window seats and a whole floor free from pokies. *Sigh*
But times change, and I guess Sydney needed one more wanky bar that caters to the 'smart casual' types. Oh well. I've heard it said that everyone ends up at The Century at least once. Well I hope you made it there before the 'management change'.
Last night we went out for drinks after work and when we sat down I had a little celebrity sighting. Sitting at the next table was Tim from Hi-5. I know, I'm such a dork. But I work with kids, OK?
On the flip side of that, Rob and I are going to see KMFDM on Saturday night.
And the hubby now has a blog, finally. So if you want to see shots of his recent trip to India, go here.
This is one brilliant link from Tankboy. You too can tell people to shut the %*$@ up when they are having loud as hell mobile phone conversations. Rock-N-Roll.
I'm getting way too obsessed with Mimi Smartypants. I find myself quoting Nora all too often.
We put up our Christmas tree today. It is finally starting to seem a little festive around here. Sigh. Let's hope the fur-boy stays off of it this year.
I got a call from the new editor of Creative Knitting Magazine. She's running a little blurb about our Summer Knitting Project at the library and wanted to get the dates right. How cool is that? And they are promoting it on their web site. (lower right hand corner) How cool is that? We had our first official knitting group yesterday and and we got better than 8 people who came, including a few young people.
And I have updated the Sydney Stitch N Bitch web site. (adding in the Trauma Teddy stuff of course...)
Speaking of Stitch N Bitch, anyone wanna go to the next Monday's one at the Harts? Now that I'm off from school for a while I need to get along to some of these. truly.
Rob is on a plane at the moment. I miss him. A bit silly I know. But I do. Sparky is cuddly and all, but not the same as my husband.
I'm watching Jamie Oliver on Tv at the moment. He's showing some rich English woman how to make berry crumble.
Looks like we are going to get a storm tonight, we need it, it has just been so hot. I just hopewe don't get a blackout. That would be spooky all on my own....
-gg
oh, and I finally got a copy of Stitch N Bitch Nation. Wow man, it is so cool.
Not as hot as it was meant to be, but it was still way too hot, I went to the movies (Garden State, good flick) with my girlfriend who is 8+ months preggers to escape the heat. When I got into her car the outside temp was like 38C. Yikes. That's almost 100F.
-gg
(oh, and I had my last final of the semester today, can I get a whoo-woo!)
So Rob leaves for for India/Singapore tomorrow and we were checking out some of the places he will be staying. This is one place he will be staying at in India. Rob noticed something that they offer something a bit, well, odd to their guests (read the list under 'attached bathroom').
